From the deck of a sailboat on Monterey Bay, Santa Cruz looks different. The Municipal Wharf reaches out over the water. The Giant Dipper climbs above the Beach Boardwalk. Families spread out on blankets along Main Beach, surfers wait for sets near the point, and other boats cross back and forth on the same wind. On land, all of that can feel busy and separate. From the water, it looks like one connected community.

A Different Perspective from the Water off Santa Cruz
A little distance changes what stands out. Small worries shrink. The bigger picture comes into focus: the people on shore, the neighbors on the next boat over, and how much everyone depends on one another. Sailors wave to each other, watch out for each other and share the same harbor. That sense of being part of something larger is a big part of why so many Bay Area families head to the coast on weekends.
Why Time on the Water Brings Peace of Mind
That calm feeling has research behind it. The BlueHealth project, led by researchers at the University of Exeter and spanning 18 countries, found that visits to coastal areas were linked to some of the best mental wellbeing outcomes of any natural setting, and that the biggest benefits came from time spent socializing and playing with children. In other words, the water does the most good when it is shared.
Peace of mind on a boat does not come from luck, though. It comes from preparation: checking the forecast, packing life jackets, knowing the route and having a plan if the wind shifts. Once that work is done, it becomes possible to relax and enjoy the view.
Life Insurance Offers the Same Peace of Mind for Bay Area Families
The same feeling applies on land. Think of the drive home over Highway 17 in the first rain of the season. The California Highway Patrol warns every year that the first rains draw oil to the road surface, making those first few hours especially slick. Or think of a quiet moment at home, watching a daughter do homework at the kitchen table. Moments like those raise a hard question: what would happen to the family if the worst happened?
Life insurance answers that question ahead of time. A well-chosen policy means the mortgage, the bills and a child’s future are covered, no matter what. That is the real value, as we wrote in Life Insurance Is About Peace of Mind. It is the same kind of preparation that makes a day on the water feel easy.
Plenty of families still go without it. According to the 2026 Insurance Barometer Study from LIMRA and Life Happens, about 92 million American adults need life insurance or more coverage. Cost is the top reason people skip it, and it is also the thing people most often get wrong. Only about a third of Americans consider themselves knowledgeable about life insurance, so a short conversation often clears things up quickly.
Five Steps to Life Insurance Peace of Mind in Morgan Hill and the South Bay
- Know the crew. List everyone who depends on the household income, then estimate what they would need. How Much Life Insurance Is Really Needed? offers a simple framework.
- Check the workplace coverage. Coverage through work often ends with the job and is rarely enough on its own. See Is Workplace Life Insurance Enough in the Bay Area?
- Pick the right type. For most families, we generally recommend term life. Term Life vs. Whole Life: A Practical Comparison explains why.
- Choose a strong carrier. A policy may need to pay out decades from now. Read Beyond the Bailout: Why the Industry Giants Are the Safer Choice.
- Know the agent by name. A real person to call makes a real difference, as covered in Who’s Your Agent? Any California agent’s license can be checked with the California Department of Insurance.

The Bottom Line
Out on the bay, preparation is what makes it possible to let go and enjoy the view of the wharf, the Boardwalk and the people on the beach. Life insurance works the same way. With the right coverage in place, the rainy drive home and the late-night worry about family both get a little lighter. That peace of mind feels good.
